Winter break is here — which means extra downtime, cozy mornings, and the perfect opportunity for kids to dive into a good book. At Texas Equine, we know how important it is to keep little brains engaged while school is out, so this is the perfect time to remind families about one of our favorite programs: The Reading Rein!

The Reading Rein is a fun, self-paced literacy challenge designed to encourage kids to read more — all through the exciting world of horses. It’s simple, engaging, and flexible enough to fit into any family’s holiday schedule.
How The Reading Rein Works
Kids choose any horse-themed book they like — fiction, nonfiction, picture books, early readers, or even a graphic novel. Once they finish the book, they complete a short worksheet that helps them think about:
Characters
Setting
Plot
Favorite moments
What they learned or enjoyed
They also get to draw a scene from the story — a favorite activity for many kids!
When they’re done, they submit their worksheet to Texas Equine through our website.

Rewards That Motivate
Every Reading Rein participant receives:
A certificate
A ribbon
A small surprise gift
Kids who participate consistently throughout the year can also earn special prizes — making this a fun ongoing challenge, not just a one-time activity.
The Perfect Winter Break Activity
Whether your child loves horses, loves reading, or needs a fun way to stay engaged during their time away from school, The Reading Rein is a fantastic way to build skills while keeping the experience light, positive, and creative.
It’s also completely home-based, meaning families can participate from anywhere — no visit to the barn required.
